It can also track the progress of such improvements. This system allows patients to discover the nearest institution where a particular service is available so that it may reduce unnecessary overcrowding at tertiary care hospitals.

Identifying health trends

As the number of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer and cardiovascular diseases rising rapidly, GIS mapping of the health facilities along with their key facility based health indices provides a method in which health managers can identify where more investments are needed for diseases that are more likely to or already have become prevalent. This enables the hospital managers to implement preventative strategies as well as allocate healthcare professionals skilled in those specific medical specialties.

Defining catchment areas and service boundaries

Tracking the spread of infectious disease

System can help identify hot-spots for infectious diseases like dengue, cholera and influenza. One of its most powerful aspects is its ability to use geography and other inputs to identify where diseases are most likely to spread next. Scope of the Project

System facilitates core healthcare indicators such as category, bed strength, bed occupancy rates, monthly OPD attendance, average admissions per month, etc shall be displayed as overlays which can be turned on or off. The map includes layers of geographical and administrative boundaries, population density and transport network. The system has enabled the decision makers to easily identify healthcare facilities that require further investment with respect to the services available according to the population served. Additional details such as a list of specialities available, clinic dates, nearest referral centre for a particular condition, and possible service disruptions will be displayed once the icon on the map is clicked by the user. The software provides functionality to edit, update and add new indicators to the mapped institutions. It also provides functionality to add new healthcare institutions to the existing map using GPS coordinates. The system disseminates data to agoogle map which can be accesses by the general public through the Ministry of Health website.
